Fun with VT100 Codes

So I after playing World of Warcraft for a while, I began to think of possible ways I could rip off the User Interface. Having a full featured UI is really really nice, and the limitations of a text interface can be really hard to deal with sometimes as a developer. So I was thinking back to the old days of terminals and such, and recalled that there was a technology for putting text on screen in a certain place, not just one line after another: VT100 terminal emulation. Anyhow, after some tinkering this is what I came up with:

You have your HP / Mana / Move bars at the top, along with the mob you're fighting, and your tank's health if you have a tank. I put the room exits up there also. The room / area info only show up if you are an immortal, otherwise that line is a large XP progress bar.

The unfortunate news is that not very many MUD clients support the VT100 emulation standard. Almost every dumb terminal / telnet client does, but so far only zMud seems to work. If you have a client you want to test with grab me in game.

we rebooted this morning to bring in a couple o new things and a bunch of changes.
The two big things are that there's a defuse command for bombs now (help defuse)
and arena champions can use the spells/skills of all members of the group now.

Minor changes:
- mobs can no longer use tribe skills
- Holy shield duration shows up in examine
- remort history uses the right gender now
- Holy word doesnt suck so much (no xp loss, better spell chances)
- the main motd comes before imm motd and tribe motd now

That's all folks!

We had an unexpected reboot this morning. So a bunch of changes were brought in a little ahead of schedule. Briefly, we're no longer dependent on ident, we have a hotboot feature 'copyover' working, and players can buy storage containers for their personal homes now. Misc other small thing were changed also. Read my latest journal posts for more details.

Player Homes Officialy In!

It's official! After years of bugging the imms for personal player homes, we've finally relented and added them! See Help Homes on the mud. As part of homes coming in, we've also incorporated usable furniture items from rom2.4. So look for stuff you can sit, stand, sleep on etc. Some of the items you can purchase for your homes have this ability. Other than that, more bug fixes, and we added a '.p' option in the string editor to preview the string you're working on in color.
